The Department of Trade and Industry has assured consumers that prices of 190 monitored basic necessities and prime commodities will remain unchanged through December 31, 2026, while supplies remain adequate.
Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque announced the assurance on October 26. The commitment covers products and stock-keeping units included in the department’s Suggested Retail Price bulletin, a reference used by consumers and retailers to monitor selected essential food and non-food items.
Economist Michael Ricafort welcomed the assurance in an October 28 Philippine News Agency report, saying stable prices could support household spending during the final quarter. He nevertheless pointed to continuing economic risks, including pressures associated with fuel costs and conditions in the Middle East.
The announcement concerns the goods covered by DTI monitoring. It should not be read as a freeze on all household expenses, including transport, electricity or every food product. Prices of individual items and the wider inflation rate measure different things, making the coverage of the assurance important for consumers planning their budgets.
