MANILA, Philippines — The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte could conclude before Congress begins its Christmas break, depending on how quickly the defense presents its evidence, according to a House prosecution panel adviser.
Robert Ace Barbers said the defense had requested eight trial days to address allegations concerning unexplained wealth, while seeking a total of 30 days for its presentation. He estimated that the proceedings could potentially finish within weeks if the defense completes its evidence presentation within the shorter period.
The Senate impeachment court is scheduled to resume hearings in November following a recess. Its announced calendar includes sessions on November 9–13, November 19–20 and November 23, with no hearing scheduled for November 30 because of the Bonifacio Day holiday.
Prosecutors have withdrawn three impeachment articles involving grave threats, alleged misuse of confidential funds and bribery, choosing to concentrate on the allegations concerning unexplained wealth. The trial’s final timetable remains dependent on court proceedings and the parties’ use of their allotted time.
