The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised Mayon Volcano’s alert status to Level 3 on October 30 after a moderately explosive eruption sent an ash plume about three kilometres above the summit crater.
In its 12:30 p.m. bulletin, PHIVOLCS said the eruption began at 11:53 a.m. and that winds carried the plume west-southwest. Ashfall was expected in Daraga, Guinobatan, Camalig and nearby communities in Albay.
The agency recommended evacuation of the six-kilometre Permanent Danger Zone because of the risks from pyroclastic density currents, lava flows, rockfalls and other volcanic hazards. It also advised vigilance along waterways draining the volcano, where lahars and sediment-laden flows could occur.
Alert Level 3 signals increased chances of a hazardous eruption. PHIVOLCS advised aviation authorities to warn pilots against flying close to the summit and said further developments would be communicated through official bulletins. Residents should follow current local evacuation instructions and updated advisories.
