Filipino surfers are set to share the spotlight with international competitors as Siargao hosts a World Surf League event at Cloud 9, with the opening scheduled for October 30.
The Philippine participants named in the October 30 report by The Freeman include John Mark Tokong, Jayuard Alciso and Mara Lopez. Their involvement gives the home audience a direct sporting interest alongside the destination’s international exposure.
The announced field includes prominent overseas surfers, while the Philippine Sports Commission has highlighted the event’s potential contribution to sports tourism. Cloud 9 is one of Siargao’s best-known surf locations and a focal point for the island’s surfing community.
PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio said sports tourism can showcase destinations and inspire local communities. The event gives Filipino competitors an opportunity to perform before an international audience while drawing attention to the island’s established surfing culture.
