The Supreme Court has directed the Senate and House of Representatives to respond to a petition questioning the voting threshold used in impeachment proceedings, adding a new legal dimension to an already contentious political process.
According to an October 29 report by The Philippine Star, the court issued an en banc resolution dated October 14 requiring the two chambers to comment before it takes further action on the petition. The development comes as Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment proceedings continue to attract scrutiny.
The dispute concerns the constitutional and procedural requirements governing impeachment decisions. Clarification of the applicable voting rules could affect how lawmakers handle contested questions during proceedings and help establish guidance for future impeachment cases.
The court’s request for comments does not mean it has granted the petition or ruled that the challenged voting threshold is unlawful. The Senate and House must first present their positions, after which the justices can determine the appropriate next steps. The development is separate from predictions about when Duterte’s trial may conclude.
